Crowns Q&A

What are dental crowns?

Dental crowns are tooth-colored caps that correct several different dental problems. They cover all visible surfaces of a damaged or weakened tooth to give you a complete smile.

As a restorative treatment, dental crowns help Dr. Brown preserve your natural tooth tissue, which keeps your jawbone healthy and strong.

When would I need a dental crown?

Dental crowns are common because they’re incredibly versatile and effective. Some of the reasons a patient might receive a dental crown include:

  • Strengthening a cracked or fractured tooth
  • Correcting irregularities in the size or shape of teeth
  • Anchoring a dental bridge
  • Completing a dental implant
  • Protecting a worn-down tooth
  • Improving discoloration that teeth whitening can’t correct

Dental crowns match the coloration and sheen of your natural teeth, so they fit impeccably into your smile.

What is it like to get a dental crown?

Before getting a dental crown fixed into place, you’ll visit Dean L Brown, DDS, for a thorough exam and to get impressions to create the crown. The staff sends the impressions to a dental lab, where your crown is created. Dr. Brown places a temporary crown while you wait for the crown to be completed.

You come back to the office once the crown is ready. You receive an injection of numbing medication to make the process comfortable.

In some cases, Dr. Brown removes a small portion of your natural tooth to make room for the crown. This step isn’t required if you are covering a dental implant or a root canal.

Once the tooth is prepared, Dr. Brown seals the crown into place using special, biocompatible dental cement. He’ll check your bite’s look and feel, making refinements as necessary. Once the crown placement is complete, you’re ready to enjoy your new smile.

You care for your new crown just like you do your natural teeth. Brush twice daily, floss, and come into Dean L Brown, DDS, for regular cleanings and oral exams.
